Hotel RIU Plaza New York Times Square Review

RIU Plaza New York

I visited the RIU Plaza at New York Times Square in early November.  The RIU Plaza is located near West 46th and 8th ave. in New York.  The hotel is within walking distance of the Broadway theater district and Times Square.

RIU is a Spanish hotel chain originally founded in Mallorca, Spain.  The hotel chain is the 30th largest in the world with over 100 hotels in 19 countries.  RIU is probably best known for its resort based all inclusive properties located in the Caribbean and other popular beach resorts around the world.

Hotel Brand

The Spanish based hotel recently started a city based line of hotels under the RIU Plaza brand.  RIU Plaza hotels operate in large cities and target both business and leisure customers.

The RIU Plaza in New York Times Square opened in 2016.  The hotel includes 29 floors and 647 rooms.  Notable amenities include the following:

  • Fashion Restaurant and Capital Bar.
  • Grab and Go Coffee shop.
  • Fitness Center.
  • Complimentary WiFi.
  • Concierge lounge for elite members or customers staying in suites.

The RIU Plaza is within walking distance of Penn Station.  Because of its proximity to Times Square, taxis are everywhere.  Walking, taxis, or Uber are the best options for getting around when staying at the hotel.

Staying in a Jr Suite

The RIU Times Square projects a modern and contemporary design.  Bright colors and flashy patterns in the lobby convey an enthusiasm and energy personified by Times Square.

I reserved a junior suite on the 27th floor.  Standard rooms are 18 sq meters and junior suites are 37 sq meters.  The suite includes a separate lounge / living room area with a sofa bed and large TV.  A large walk-in rain shower and soaking tub were included in the suite.

The suite was designed with the same modern and contemporary themes as the hotel.  The layout included an open floor plan bedroom, living room, and half of the bathroom area.  Framed artwork of the New York skyline filled the wall space in the suite.

Room View

The suite offered an impressive view of 57th street.  You could see the edges of Times Square from the room.  The benefit of this was a good view but without the dramatic amount of fluorescent light from the Times Square billboards getting into the room.

Despite being right near Times Square, I didn’t hear significant noise from the windows.  Some of that could be due to the high floor of the hotel.  The main window blinds were thick.  When I closed the blinds, the little street noise I did hear dissipated.

Eating at the Fashion Restaurant

The Fashion restaurant serves breakfast from 7 am to 11 am.  It serves lunch from 12 pm to 3 pm and dinner from 5 pm to 11 pm.  I didn’t eat breakfast at the hotel because I had to checkout before 7 am.  I did eat dinner inside the restaurant the night before.

The Fashion restaurant has a casual theme.  The restaurant offers a combination of American and Spanish flavors.  The prices are very reasonable despite the restaurant’s proximity to tourist heavy Times Square.  I thought the food was good, but not at the level where you needed to go out of your way to try it.  I saw the restaurant as a good option if you wanted something quick and didn’t want to fight the restaurant crowds.

Pros

  • Great location within walking distance to major attractions and transportation.
  • Mid-range hotel with a very reasonable price point.
  • Very limited street noise inside the 27th floor suite.
  • Good service and well maintained property.

Cons

  • Because of its location near Times Square, the hotel attracts a lot of high energy and excitement from people exploring New York City for the first time.  Don’t plan to stay at the RIU Plaza if your looking for a quiet place to relax for a few days.
