I stayed at the Boston Courtyard Marriott in late September as part of a business trip. The Boston Courtyard is just 10 minutes from the Boston Logan Airport. I chose the Courtyard partially because I am taking the Marriott Platinum Challenge but also because of its proximity to the Boston Logan Airport.
The main benefit of a hotel near the airport rather than directly at the airport is reduced noise from nearby aircraft. Some hotels next to the airport use materials that make the hotel virtually soundproof from nearby aircraft like the Frankfurt Hilton Airport Hotel. The trick is figuring out which hotels do the best job of reducing aircraft noise before you make a reservation which can be hard when traveling to new cities.
The Courtyard Boston Logan Airport hotel is located 2.6 miles (roughly 5 to 6 minutes by car) from the Boston Logan Airport. For the easiest transportation option to the hotel from the Boston Logan Airport, look for the hotel shuttle signs by baggage claim. I landed in terminal B and the Courtyard shuttle picked me up near the door labeled B102.
Courtyard operates a 24 hour airport shuttle. Shuttles drive through the Logan Airport every 15 to 20 minutes. Since the shuttle frequency increases during peak periods you may want to call the Courtyard front desk to confirm the next shuttle time if you need a ride during off peak times. The shuttle is also available to drop off hotel guests at nearby restaurants and the Logan Airport subway station.
Marriott Courtyards operate as limited service hotels. This means that no lounge was available for elite members and no room service at the hotel. However the Courtyard did have a large restaurant and lounge downstairs in the lobby with flexible hours.
Brinkley’s restaurant is open until midnight each night during the week. Breakfast was free for elite members inside the restaurant. Brinkley’s restaurant included a full restaurant with a separate bar area with multiple TV’s. The dinner menu was fairly extensive and included a number of good options. Due to an early morning meeting, I didn’t have time to eat breakfast inside the restaurant.
As a limited service hotel, Courtyards don’t have the same level of service as larger Marriott branded hotels. However, that doesn’t mean that Courtyards should be avoided. The Boston Logan Courtyard included an indoor pool, a small 24 hour gym, and a large lounge area in the downstairs lobby with multiple computers available to print out boarding passes.
When checking in at the Boston Logan Courtyard, I asked whether any suites were available. So far during the Marriott Platinum challenge, I’ve been 3 for 5 with suite upgrades. Marriott does not offer elite members guaranteed suites the way Hyatt does. However, by using a little charm and politely asking whether any suites are available, your chances of receiving a suite upgrade improve dramatically.
When I asked if any suites were available at the Boston Courtyard, the check-in employee informed me the hotel was fully sold out due to a number of Boston conventions. The Boston conventions also caused the hotel rates at this Courtyard to be in excess of $400 a night.
The Boston Courtyard room was a standard room. The room was clean and there was a decent view outside with a partial view of the Boston skyline. I would have preferred a suite, but you can’t get a lucky upgrade at every hotel. The more important quality of a room nearby the airport is the amount of noise when you are trying to sleep.
Inside my room, noise from the airport was almost non-existent. Prior to sleeping, I really didn’t notice any noise from the airport. When I need to get up early in the morning and I’m traveling, I like to leave the curtains partially open to let in sunlight in the morning. I did notice that when the room was completely quiet, I could hear some faint muffled noise from nearby airplanes. However, when I fully closed the thick blinds, I really couldn’t hear any noise from the airport.
After settling in the room, I realized that I forgot my razor and shaving cream. Thankfully, when I called down to the front desk, they offered to have someone run a free kit upstairs to my room. A simple touch like that is what makes a Courtyard stand out as a solid option for business travelers staying for a night or two and need to be close to the airport.
- Shuttle to the Boston Logan Airport operates 24 hours a day.
- The Boston Logan Courtyard’s free shuttle drops customers at nearby restaurants and the subway station in addition to the Boston Logan Airport.
- Brinkley’s restaurant hours extend to midnight during the week.
- Difficulty staying online with the hotel’s free WiFi service.
- Convention season in Boston significantly increased the room cost.
The Boston Logan Courtyard is a quality hotel ideally suited for business travelers staying for a single night or two. I really appreciated a free 24 hour airport shuttle that stops at restaurants and public transportation in addition to the Boston Logan Airport. Although the hotel offers no room service, Brinkley’s restaurant maintains week day hours until midnight for travelers arriving late in the evening. As a limited service business hotel, the Courtyard Boston Logan makes a good choice for business travelers that need to stay nearby the Boston Logan Airport.
