Singapore Airlines 777 300ER Business Class Singapore to Frankfurt Review

Singapore Airlines Boeing 777

I checked out of the Grand Hyatt Singapore and headed to the Singapore Changi Airport and a stop at the Singapore Airlines SilverKris lounge.  I intended to fly back to the US, but I wanted to do it in business class.  I’ve found Singapore Airlines to be a really high quality airline but I’ve also had a lot of luck finding open business class award space on Singapore Airlines.

Singapore Airlines allows one stop over when booking one way tickets.  However you need to speak with a customer service representative to book the stop over.  But booking an award ticket through a customer service agent prevents the 15% online booking discount.  My approach was to first book a direct award flight from Singapore to JFK for 135,000 Kris Flyer miles online (114,750 miles after the online discount).

I monitored Singapore Airline’s web site to see if a pair of flights were open on any days that would make it possible to make a stopover in Frankfurt.  About a week prior to my flight, when I was staying at the Park Hyatt Sydney, I found open space on the web site.  I called Singapore Airlines and politely asked if I could make the switch so that a three day stop-over was possible in Frankfurt before finishing the trip back at JFK in New York.  It was my lucky day as the agent made the switch and didn’t charge any additional miles beyond the initial 114,750 Kris Flyer miles.

  • Singapore to Frankfurt Germany (stop-over with a final flight to JFK New York on the same award ticket).
  • Departure: 1:55pm.
  • Arrival: 8:40pm.
  • Duration: 12 hours and 45 minutes.
  • Aircraft: Boeing 777-300ER.
  • Seat: 17D.
  • Cash Cost: $5,438.56.
  • How I paid: 114,750 Kris Flyer miles (135,000 before the 15% online discount) and $443.52 in taxes.  I transferred Citi Thank You points to Kris Flyer miles to pay for the trip.  I earned the Citi Thank You points with a combination of regular credit card spending and the sign up bonus when I applied for the Citi Prestige credit card.

Thankfully the 12 hour flight from Singapore included the newer business class seats which have additional padding and recline fully.  My previous flight from Sydney on a Singapore Airlines A330 business class award ticket included the older regional business class seats which don’t recline to a fully flat position.  The new business class seats are available on Singapore Airbus A350 aircraft and retrofitted Boeing 777-300ER aircraft.

Final Thoughts

Business class on Singapore Airlines can really spoil you.  Flying on the Boeing 777 300ER with the fully flat seats was a much better experience than the almost fully flat seats on the Singapore A330 business class flight.  The only thing I enjoyed more than this flight was the Singapore Airlines Suites flight on the Airbus A380.
